Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communication Technology
Vehicle to Vehicle communication often referred as V2V communication is a subset of V2X set, which aims for the communication link between two vehicular system. It is a wireless communication system that allows vehicles to directly communicate and share data with nearby vehicles with or without relying on mobile or terrestrial networks, enabling cars to “talk to each other” in real time.
Why needed ?
- The need of V2V communication arises from the safety perspective of the vehicle in which this technology aids in preventing collisions and pile-ups by giving vehicle real time tracking about sudden braking, speed changes and nearby traffic.
- This improve safety of vehicle as well as aids in blind-spot and low-visibility conditions by alerting drivers about hidden, stationary or fog-covered vehicles.
How it works?
- This system operates in a network which can be assumed as a mesh network for easy understanding with each vehicle being node of that network. Each vehicle is installed with a small device inside it which establish the communication between the different vehicle(nodes).
- This device can be based on terrestrial SIM based as well as non-terrestrial network (Satellite based) network which allows the device to transmit as well as receive signals from nearby vehicles.
- Deployed as real-time communication link, as the car moves, it keeps sharing information with the nearby devices installed in vehicles. The extent of the information shared can its location, speed, direction, and whether it is braking or accelerating. At the same time, it also receives the same information from other vehicles around it.
- As recently approves by the Department of Telecommunications a dedicated band of (5.875 to 5.905 GHz) which eliminates the dependance on the towers and making it works even without mobile internet.
- While moving vehicles detects that another vehicle sudden braking, or the in-between distance is less than the threshold distance as set in the device, the device can warn the driver about the same so driver can take appropriate action to prevent any mishappening.
- In future this system can be clubbed with the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for the fast and automatic response taken by the system which can slow down or start applying brake of car to prevent the collision.
Advantages:
- Real-time alerts : Since the communication is real-time, the vehicle will be informed about the dynamic changing environment in real-time having an advantage over the deterministic safety devices installed in vehicles.
- Aids in low-visibility condition :- This system can aid in preventing the collision of two vehicles, or in maintaining the adequate distance between two vehicles.
- Integration with existing devices :- These devices can be integrated with the integrated safety system like ADAS to further enhance the safety and security of devices.
- Non dependance on terrestrial network :- In the situation of remote place with no tower, the system can aid in sending distress alerts to the base station for help.
Limitations:
- Newer Technology: Being the new technology, the implementation of the system in the actual scenario is challenging.
- Adaptation Challenge :- Since the network is inter-dependent network, the mass adaption to the network is necessary for the results.
- Integration :- At one place where the integration with the existing safety technology can help in safety also on another hand the integration of the device with the vehicle with different manufacturer and type is major challenge.
- Network protocol :- For establishing of the network between multiple vehicles, it is necessary for every device to operate on the same common protocol regardless of the different vehicle or device manufacturer.
